Essentials of the Winter Hideaway Retreat - Val Müstair

Welcome, dear guest!
We would like to invite you to our Winter Hideaway Retreat at the Hotel Chalavaina, located at the entrance to the charming village of Müstair. Surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Biosfera Val Müstair Nature Park in eastern Switzerland, our hotel is the perfect place to unwind. Here, the silence and strength of the mountains are combined with flowing yoga classes, cleansing sauna sessions, and invigorating ice baths to create a transformative experience that will leave you feeling renewed.
In the midst of the snowy alpine landscape, you can find a space to let go, ground yourself, and gain clarity for the new year.

With guidance from an experienced yoga teacher and cold exposure expert, you can recharge, find inspiration, and connect deeply with yourself.
This retreat is ideal if you long to immerse yourself in a harmonious blend of yoga, saunas and ice baths while being embraced by crisp mountain air, winter forests and the peaceful stillness of snow-covered peaks.

Daily journaling, deep conversations with like-minded people, the warmth of an open fire, delicious home-cooked food and deep rest await you.

Yoga

Find balance between effort and ease.
Start your day with Morning Meditation and Vinyasa Flow, synchronising your breath with the sunrise. Feel the energy of the surrounding nature as you stretch and strengthen your body.

In the evening, unwind with a 45–60-minute yin yoga or yoga nidra session. Release stress and tension as you are guided by the soothing sounds of nature and a carefully curated playlist.

Ice Bath

Although the ice bath may feel uncomfortable at first, it can make you feel amazing mentally and physically. It reduces muscle soreness, boosts the immune system and improves circulation, metabolism and sleep quality.

Join us for an invigorating ice bath experience to welcome in the New Year, guided every step of the way by our experienced Ice Bath Guidance Nives.

Sharing this unique experience with others fosters a sense of community and mutual encouragement, making the experience both manageable and enjoyable as you support each other.

The workshop includes an introduction, breathwork sessions and a cold plunge.
The ice bath is ready and waiting to welcome you into its clear and invigorating waters.

Nourishing Cuisine

The flavours of the valley are brought straight to your plate.
The scent of freshly brewed coffee in the morning invites you to enjoy breakfast in the cosy guest room.
The local grains, bread, honey and sweet spreads all originate here in the valley. Butter and cheese are brought to the table with organic hay milk from the monastery farm; the cheese is crafted in the local Chascharia Müstair and aged in the historic cellars of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Monastery of St. Johann.

Each meal reflects the valley itself: it is seasonal, heartfelt and deeply connected to nature, and is served in the historic 'black' kitchen with an open fire.

After your yoga practice, we serve breakfast to energise you for the day ahead.
For those moments between meals, satisfy your cravings with our selection of wholesome snacks and soups.

Meanwhile, chef Oliver Thaler draws inspiration from the meadows and forests just outside the door to prepare your two-course dinner.

Private Sauna Session

Just a few steps away, hidden in a former barn, is a small, exquisite sauna area. Heated exclusively for our guests, it provides the perfect place to relax after an ice bath.

Optional activities

While there is plenty of time to relax and focus on yourself, you can also enrich your experience by taking part in a variety of optional activities.

You can explore the UNESCO World Heritage monastery of St. Johann, discover the 100-year-old art of handweaving at Tessanda, or enjoy a guided snowshoe hike or cross-country skiing on scenic local trails if snow conditions are suitable.

Tailor your retreat to your own rhythm by combining deep relaxation with inspiring excursions in the heart of Val Müstair.

Your home

Dining with soul and authenticity.
Meals are enjoyed in the cosy arven-wood dining room, surrounded by original furniture and the smoky charm of the historic Russküche (black kitchen). The cuisine is honest, refined and deeply rooted in the valley.

My cooking is inspired by nature, characterised by curiosity and driven by a deep love of detail. I love cooking over an open fire and experimenting with different ingredients.
